Homework 7/11/13: Evaluation of what my questionnaire has taught me about the target audience
My Questionnaire has shown me what my target audience really wants from a magazine. Starting off with the colour and look of the magazine. The pie chart below shows what sort of colours they prefer in a magazine and using this information I will consider colours similar to include in my magazine.
The font section of my questionnaire had 3 different font choices for the title. As the pie chart below shows 14 out of the 20 people chose the 3rd option which I also prefer so I will be using either this font or something very similar to use as my title font.

In the other questions asked people use social media quite a lot so this would make me think about using social media to attract to the attention of the online users to read my magazine. I would make a website in order to get more people to read my magazine online as this would then let the online users see it aswell as the magazine readers.
I will put in some features of new bands and artists and give a free download code for the main featured new band. This would then give the readers a chance to see if they like the music and then continue to listen to them.

To construct a Health and Safety assessment of one or more photo-shoots I will be conducting for my magazine considering all possible eventualities.
Key Skills :
What types of risks may there be in a photo-shoot?
Hazard - Anything that can cause harm (e.g electricity, ladders, chemicals)
Assessing the Risks
Major
Serious
Minor
High
Medium
Low
Risk= Severity of harm X Likelihood of occurrence
The sum gives a risk value of 1-9 allowing a comparison or risks. 1 being the highest and 9 the lowest

To explore design mock ups to aid the flat planning process
I can see that the front cover, when simplified down, is very basic and does not have a difficult layout plan. Magazine companies have made the plan simple so that when its built up to the main cover, it isn't too overpowering.
I can see that the advert page is plain and easy to make. It isn't very interesting but it is easy to read as there aren't many adverts on the page.
On the review page I can see that the text is put all around the main centred image. It is easy to read as there isn't much text.

To consider the effectiveness of market research and start a draft of a questionnare
Today I have learnt how to structure a questionnaire towards a specific audience and what questions are more important than others.
We should care about our audience as they are the people we are trying to sell our magazine to and they are important for further market research.
We should care about our research as if we didnt care then we wouldnt be able to gather any information into what our audience was like and what they wanted. Without research nothing would get done correctly and would result in a failed magazine.
A questionnaire is significantly important to developing a magazine or anything as it is what makes gives the editors information into what the reader wants and likes about the magazine. An effective questionnaire would be asking about colours and asking about the theme of the magazine e.g music, like what their favourite music is etc.
How do you make an effective and helpful questionnaire? :
What are the strengths and weaknesses of using questionnaires?
Strengths:
Quantitative: Closed questions ('Do you prefer...? Yes/No) Easier to handle as answers can be added up.

- Limit the amount of responses the person can give you
What are the strengths and weaknesses of using questionnaires?
Strengths:
- Fair anonymous results.
- You can ask specific and detailed questions.
- Can give instructions to respondents.
- You can narrow the answers you want.
- You can distribute it easily.
- Use of online surveys convenient and paperless.
- Useful method if the researcher wishes to survey a large sample- cheap, efficient and time saving way of getting responses from a large numbers of individuals in a relatively short time.
- Not always going to get enough results to get a good idea of what the audience wants.
- Some online questionnaire site may stop you from using certain questions.
- Questions can mean different things to different people.

To research local products, events, businesses and see how they are relevant to a target audience.
Local Advertising
Campaign
Access to
music is a music college all across the England, and has a college in Brighton.
In the magazine there is a full page dedicated to access to music. It is quite early on in the magazine showing that they have paid more money in order to get it to be closer to the front and that compared to some of the other adverts it has put in a lot of money in order to make sure people see it and not skim read over it.
In the XYZ
magazine they have a full page on access to music trying to get more students
to come to their college instead of going to Bimm Brighton which has its own full page
spread further into the magazine. It applies to the magazine well as it’s a
music magazine and having a music college in a music magazine gives the company
an easier route to the people who are interested in music.
On the webpage they have a lot of different options to click on and entice the user to examine further into the college, one in particular is the success story section which talks about the success of some big name musicians in the music industry. The social media section down the bottom left of the webpage gives you 4 different options for different social media websites to share it with your friends so that they can spread the name of the company and get more people to join their college.

To analyse music magazines, considering how their genre is conveyed and the typical features of a front cover
Music magazines I have heard of :
2) Cool list #45 posing with his hair being blown back
3) Cool list #11 leaning against a wall posing with his arms crossed
2) Cool list #4 sticking her tongue out and looking tough
3) Cool list #34 posing putting glasses on

- NME
- Kerrang!
- Q
- Mojo
- Clash
- Metal Hammer
- XXL
- Complex
- Uncut
- DJ
- I have never bought a music magazine.
- If I were to buy a music magazine I would be tempted to buy an NME magazine
- Magazine Title : The 50 Coolest People In Music
- Publisher : NME
- Target Audience : Men and women from 16 to 40
- Genre : Pop, rock
- A selection of article subjects : Top 50 coolest people in music, new bands breaking through
- Description of 3 male photos :
2) Cool list #45 posing with his hair being blown back
3) Cool list #11 leaning against a wall posing with his arms crossed
- Description of 3 female photos :
2) Cool list #4 sticking her tongue out and looking tough
3) Cool list #34 posing putting glasses on
- What 'ideologies' of points of view or attitudes are implied : The Cool list is to show who's the coolest in the music industry at that current point in time and why they are cool.
- Summary of products advertised : Mainly music related things like new album releases and gigs and concerts e.g The Black keys. They are advertising their own TV and Radio channels
- Main bands/singers featured : Plan B, Janelle Monae, Kayne West

Homework 17/9/13: Editors' roles - research
Different Editor Jobs
There are many different editor jobs required in a magazine as there is so much work that it would be impossible to only have 1 editor that would have to cover all sections of the magazine and also manage those sections. This is why magazines have a full range of different editors in order to keep the magazine production running smoothly.
First and foremost the Executive Editor ( also referred to as the Editor or the Editor in Chief ) has the most important job as they are required to keep things moving along and making sure the magazine is set for release on the deadline date, they also have to keep the team motivated and working to the best of their ability in order to make the magazine up to standard. The Executive Editor is also responsible
for strategic and operational planning. This means that they are pretty much the head of the magazine and has an influence on what is to be put into the magazine.
The Copy Editor has the job of a reading over the text that is to be put into the magazine and making sure it makes sense, has been put into the house style, correcting any errors or typos in the text, checking that the images that are used in the magazine have the correct captions under or beside them. They are required to work normal office hours most days, but in case of a busy period they will work longer hours in order to reach the set deadline. ( A freelance Copy Editor will usually work from home and would have more freedom to decide what hours they would work ).
An Art Editor is in charge of making the magazine look good and easy to read. Their typical work would be to; laying out the pages and using the most suitable graphics and photographs, discussing ideas with colleagues such as journalists and editorial staff, producing cover designs to be used on the magazine, setting an overall style for the publications and making sure that each issue follows this style. Like a Copy Editor the hours are similar and working some extra hours to meet deadlines are usually required.
A Commissioning Editor role is to keep the company in profit and not to go over into debt. Things that a Commissioning Editor might do are to; keep up with new trends, identifying future markets and new products, making sure that schedules and deadlines are met on time. The hours for a Commissioning Editor are different to other editors as the yare expected to work long hours and irregular hours, including evenings to meet schedules.
To consider how magazine staff are divided in terms of their skills, To identify which skills are needed to do particular jobs in the publishing industry
The Publishing sector on the UK
The Publishing industry employs over 195,000 people, representing approximately 36% of the creative media workforce.
- 51,000 people employed in the newspaper sector
- 50,500 work In journals and magazine
- 33,000 in the book industry
- 12,00 in the other information service activities
1) One of the differences between the 2 pictures is that the NME magazine has the title of the section that the people work in in a bold black line rather than the XXL magazine have it just in plain black
Another difference is that the alignment of the NME magazine is all to the left and the XXL magazine has the alignment all down the centre.
One other difference is that the name of the persons role is in bold and the name is in regular font and the XXL magazine is the exact opposite
2) The wording for the jobs like "Chief sub editor" in the NME magazine is different to the XXL magazine that says "Deputy Editor" Showing that NME have a lot more staff that are important to the magazine
3) The NME has a web section for there website showing the importance of online advertising
(VIDEO INSERT- How To Make it- Journalism)
What do you think are the responsibilities of a Chief Editor
- Setting deadlines for each sections
- Checking each section of the magazine for problems or typos
- Managing staff members
- Making the official decisions in what to do
- Is in charge of everything going on
- Delegating tasks
- Leads meetings
- Attends functions, events, award ceremonies
- The "Public Face" of the story
- Budget Control
- Occasional column writing/ Editorial Piece
- Strategic Planning
- Legal decisions
- Build up contacts and connections
- Manages careers of present and new staff, motivating team
- Liase with publisher, marketing depts, media sales team, PR agencies
