Homework 17/9/13: Editors' roles - research

Different Editor Jobs

There are many different editor jobs required in a magazine as there is so much work that it would be impossible to only have 1 editor that would have to cover all sections of the magazine and also manage those sections. This is why magazines have a full range of different editors in order to keep the magazine production running smoothly.

First and foremost the Executive Editor ( also referred to as the Editor or the Editor in Chief ) has the most important job as they are required to keep things moving along and making sure the magazine is set for release on the deadline date, they also have to keep the team motivated and working to the best of their ability in order to make the magazine up to standard. The Executive Editor is also responsible
for strategic and operational planning. This means that they are pretty much the head of the magazine and has an influence on what is to be put into the magazine.

The Copy Editor has the job of a reading over the text that is to be put into the magazine and making sure it makes sense, has been put into the house style, correcting any errors or typos in the text, checking that the images that are used in the magazine have the correct captions under or beside them. They are required to work normal office hours most days, but in case of a busy period they will work longer hours in order to reach the set deadline. ( A freelance Copy Editor will usually work from home and would have more freedom to decide what hours they would work ).

An Art Editor is in charge of making the magazine look good and easy to read. Their typical work would be to; laying out the pages and using the most suitable graphics and photographs, discussing ideas with colleagues such as journalists and editorial staff, producing cover designs to be used on the magazine, setting an overall style for the publications and making sure that each issue follows this style. Like a Copy Editor the hours are similar and working some extra hours to meet deadlines are usually required.

A Commissioning Editor role is to keep the company in profit and not to go over into debt. Things that a Commissioning Editor might do are to; keep up with new trends, identifying future markets and new products, making sure that schedules and deadlines are met on time. The hours for a Commissioning Editor are different to other editors as the yare expected to work long hours and irregular hours, including evenings to meet schedules.
