To construct a Health and Safety assessment of one or more photo-shoots I will be conducting for my magazine considering all possible eventualities.

Key Skills :

  • Professional responsibility
  • Applying my knowledge of professional practises
  • Showing forethought and evidence of planning an event
  • Using the opportunity to research independently for my individual situation/s
TUC - Trades Union Congress

NUJ - national Union of Journalists

NUJ's H&S Concerns :

  • Bullying
  • Stress
  • Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
  • Public Order Situations
  • Conflict Zones
  • Exiled Journalists ( Exile - asked to leave )

What types of risks may there be in a photo-shoot?

  • Trip on trailing wires or the leg or a tripod
  • Knocking over a light and having it fall on someone
  • Wire could be exposed and someone could get an electric shock/electrocuted
  • Fire Hazards e.g Lighting and overheated electrical equipment
  • Carrying heavy equipment and hurting yourself
  • Temperature control
  • Asbestos in buildings?
  • Checking for adequate lighting
Risk- How great the chance that someone will be harmed by the hazard
Hazard - Anything that can cause harm (e.g electricity, ladders, chemicals)

Assessing the Risks

Major
Serious
Minor

High
Medium
Low

Risk= Severity of harm X Likelihood of occurrence

The sum gives a risk value of 1-9 allowing a comparison or risks. 1 being the highest and 9 the lowest

To explore design mock ups to aid the flat planning process

I can see that the front cover, when simplified down, is very basic and does not have a difficult layout plan. Magazine companies have made the plan simple so that when its built up to the main cover, it isn't too overpowering.

I can see that the advert page is plain and easy to make. It isn't very interesting but it is easy to read as there aren't many adverts on the page.

On the review page I can see that the text is put all around the main centred image. It is easy to read as there isn't much text.

To identify how I need to organise my project and troubleshoot potential issues

The reason I am writing up all the things needed for the photo-shoot is that anything that goes wrong, could be solved quickly and that when we are doing the photo-shoot, if anything were to go wrong, the day wouldn't be wasted and wouldn't have to rearrange the photo-shoot for everybody.

Equipment :

  • Camera
  • Batteries
  • Tripod
  • Ladder
  • Lights/Lighting
  • Memory storage
  • Props
  • Make-up
  • Laptop
  • Costumes
  • Photoshop/software
  • weather protection equipment ( e.g umbrella, gazebo, waterproofs )
  • Camera filters
  • Camera lenses
  • Backpacks
  • Backgrounds ( e.g white back screen, greenscreen )
  • Remote Shutter
Problems that could occur :

  • Camera could get dropped and break
  • Camera gets an error and wont work afterwards
  • Camera shutter gets dirt or dust on it and end up with specs on the photos
  • Weather could be bad
  • Batteries die and you don't have a spare
  • A bit of equipment could be stolen on set
  • Could run out of memory and don't have a spare
  • Laptop dies or gets broken

Solutions :

  • Bring a spare camera
  • Always wear the camera strap
  • Bring some compressed air for dust on camera shutter
  • Look at weather forecast
  • Have spare batteries on hand
  • Keep watch of all equipment
  • Have a spare memory card on hand ( preferably 8gb )
  • Use a main computer and back up your photos

Location :

  • Studio
  • Beach
  • Field
  • City
  • Empty streets
  • End of the Pier
  • Brighton Eye

To evaluate progress so far in decision making within this project

Primary research : New investigations into something (questionnaires etc)

Secondary research :   Investigations made by others that you refer to (using information from magazine' media packs found on the internet)

1) In order to research my chosen genre I have created a PowerPoint on things about my chosen genre and

2) In order to research existing magazines, I have bought a music magazine to have a look into how the publishers style their magazine in the way of different genres. To make my research better I could look at the websites of different magazines

3) In order to investigate my target audience's needs and desires I have devised a questionnaire to give to them and get some information about them. I have also searched up the fashion of the genre. To make this better I could add a few more questions to gather more information about them.

4) In order to conduct better primary research I need to
